Thinking about building a website now what? – Kimberly Gosney

How do you decide if you need a designer or if you want to build your very own website.

It’s a tricky situation.

Go pro and you’re handing over a big chunk of your money to someone else.

DIY and you’re sacrificing your time for the hope that you’ll be able to do this.

Where do you start?

What do you do?

Yikes!

All of the decisions like:

  • branding.
  • colors.
  • fonts.
  • images.

Trying to understand the what behind the why and everything else that can leave you overwhelmed, anxious and nervous before you even make your first decisions and buy your domain name.

Here are my top 5 tips for what to do when you really want a website, but have no idea where or how to get started.

If you can complete these 5 things – you’re well on your way to starting the site building process.

1. Secret Pinterest Boards.

Go to Pinterest and make a secret board. Share it with one of your business besties. On this secret Pinterest board you’re going to start pinning everything that you loooooove. Have you visited a website that made your heart swoon?

Pin it on your Pinterest Board.

Have you looked at a website that you wanted to curl up in and get cozy with? Wanted to hit the buy button on a great sales page? Totally a Secret Pinterest Board worthy event.

By having a Secret Pinterest Board you can start building yourself a road map of things, ideas, inspirations to help you get started.

Big ah-ha here:

This board isn’t for you to copy the stuff you see when you there. But, instead it’s the stuff that appeals to you. The stuff that if you could have your pie in the sky best website ever experience. These things pinned here would be the best examples of it.

2. What do you want to be insanely awesome at?

Let’s say you’re a health coach. That’s great! High fives to you – you want to be a health coach. Break out the glutten free everything and hold the sugar.

That’s what you want to be – but, what do you want to be insanely awesome at?

Do you want to be the health coach that has recipes for creating the most delicious healthiest cupcakes that use carrots and veggies instead of sugar and chocolate?

Do you want to be the health coach that’s a marathon runner talking about how your healthy habits propel you to run 26 miles without breaking a sweat?

It’s not just enough to be a health coach – you have to be an insanely awesome one so how will you do that?!?

3. Time or money?

Your entire website journey can be broken down into two simple parts.

Time or money.

Money or time.

What do you have more of time or money? money or time?

If you’ve got more money – hire a designer.

If you’ve got more time – DIY your website.

4. Creativity.

Your website is your creativity.

It’s your chance to show off.

To send out the very best of how you see yourself.

Ready to get naked with your creativity? Head over to Picmonkey and pop an image of yourself on there and go wild. If you can take just one pic of yourself that the whole world would fall in looooooove with…

What would that picture look like?

5. Knowledge is power.

Grab a note card and jot down 5 new things that you’d like to learn how to do.

When you’re building a website or having one built – you’re going to need to learn how to do new things! Do you know how to:

  • Write about yourself or tell stories about yourself? If not – you need to learn how to write copy.
  • Use WordPress? If not – you need to take a course to give you the basics.
  • Design graphics or images? If not you’ll need Picmonkey skills (see Number 4.)
  • Make a Paypal button? If not – you’ll need to hop on Paypal.
  • Engage with peeps on Facebook or Twitter? If not – take a marketing class.

Once you’ve got these 5 things under your belt you’ll be able to start building a website or having one built for you.

If you get stuck – rinse and repeat the five steps above until you’ve got a plan.

Then take action on your plan and you’ll have the best website on planet Earth.
