Creating Your Website Power Map – Kimberly Gosney

You know what? This week I should be making a video for you on using styled stock images on your website, but on to your keyboard.

There’s something you need to do BEFORE you dig in to colors, fonts, and images for your website.

There’s an important step that if you skip it … things won’t turn out right on your website.

Even if you’ve got the prettiest images, colors, and fonts on the planet.

You need a map and a plan of how you’re going to get your website to work for YOU.

Yes, can I get an amen!

Without a clear plan for your website you’re never going to know how to filter the good, bad, and the ugliest craziest of your ideas into a solid foundation to grow your business.

Your website is the place to get your message, brand, and business in the hands of people that need it the most.

It’s also the place where you need to take back your power.

You don’t want to be wishy washy when it comes to your website and not having power in this key area of your business is a huge mistake.

We’re going to take this slow and steady and I’m going to share 5 tips for Creating Your Website Power Map.

Are you ready?!?

Let’s dig in shall we.

STEP 1: What does my website need to do for me?

(Time to complete this step -10 minutes.)

Open up Evernote, Google Docs, or grab a notebook and a pen and write everything down that you think you need your website to do and be in order for your business to prosper and thrive. This is the spot to put down your hopes, dreams, ideas, money goals, and everything you can think of that will make you happy when it comes to your website.

Back in my retail days we called this a “punch list” and it was like a laundry list of all the stuff that needed to happen to make our store look good for customers and help them buy what they needed without being confused or irritated.

So you’re going to make this list for yourself so you don’t become confused or irritated about what your website will do for you to make your business better for your visitors.

STEP 2: What is one thing my website needs from me today?

Focused attention on your website gives you what you and your visitors need the most.

Have you ever hopped on your website for a quick peek before giving someone your URL only to see a whole bunch of hot mess stuff that makes you feel some serious icky website shame? Then, you peeked at a few more pages and suddenly everything about your website just sucks. Then, you feel like you suck, your business sucks, and now you go and eat some Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream?

True story today I have website shame and I do website stuff for a living! I know if I have it – you might have it too. I’m going to share with you something that I’ve noticed on my own site this morning.

My current freebie opt-in. Yep, this happened three weeks ago.

Website face plant.

Website Shame

When you identify what your website needs from you, that becomes a power step. Something you can do to take back your website power.

Schedule a date with your website to take this power step.

Do not leave your website without scheduling a time to take this power step. My power step for {insert your website shame part here} will be completed on {insert your scheduled date here} and I will feel {insert a feeling word here} when it is completed.

My example for this is:

My power step for creating a new opt-in for my website will be completed on May 12th and I will feel supercalifragilisticexpalydocius when it is completed.

Side note here – my daughter asked me how to spell supercalifragilisticexpalydocius when I put her to bed last night and I told her we’d “Google” it. I did not “Google” it so I’m 100% sure I did not spell it right.

You’re picking ONE thing to keep everything focused instead of feeling like everything sucks – you’re going to start with the one thing that you see that you can make something happen quickly and easily.

Takeaway: Dates and feelings make a power step real, but it needs to happen one power step at a time.

STEP 3: Am I making headway with my website?

Did you complete your one power step on your scheduled website date?

Yes or No.

If you answered Yes – glory be Creating Your Website Power Map worked for YOU and I’m so happy because I love it when you take a power step and get to happy dance all about it in your living room. PJ pants – optional.

If the answer is no … take a peek at Step 4 below.

STEP 4: What is my website kryptonite?

Superman is Superman … until someone pulls out the kryptonite.

If you’re power step didn’t get completed – you’ve just met your website kryptonite.

Website kryptonite are the millions of tiny things that come up, crop up, happen to you that get in the way of your website power. They stop you in your website tracks.

Identify your website kryptonite. Is it internal or external?

Internal website kyrptonite is the stuff you tell yourself that makes it impossible to take your power step. Stuff like:

  • I don’t know how to do this.
  • I don’t know where to start.
  • So and so does this better than me.
  • I’m never going to make it.
  • Facebook. Instagram. Twitter #loves me today.
  • I’m taking the day off because I can’t deal with any of this.

External website stuff is the stuff that is out of your control and rears it’s head to squash you like a bug on a windshield:

  • Your kiddo wakes up sick with the plague.
  • You wake up sick with the said plague.
  • Your hosting is down.
  • Your internet is down.

If you’ve got icky internal stuff going on it’s time to get out of that funk and take back your website power by calling someone you trust that can help you get back on track.

I call my momma. No kidding. You can ask her. My daddy and sister think she should start charging me by the hour for services phone call rendered.

If you’ve got external stuff going on – well – chances are you just need to call on the universe and say I hear you, thank you for this icky external stuff – then set a new date with your website to make it happen.

STEP 5: Am I doing everything it takes when it comes to my website?

This one is a biggie.

Your website is never, ever, ever going to be perfect. No matter what. Your goal is not perfection it’s power.

Are you doing everything it takes when it comes to your website to get your power back?

Websites are greedy little hungry monsters and to fight a website monster you’ve got to bring your inner Superman Superwoman.

Cape, cupcakes, and all.

But, if you’ve made it all the way down here 1186 words in, I’m betting that your inner Superwoman is on it!

Everything it takes.

Superwoman to the rescue. You’ve got this.
